A recent statistical re-analysis of 39 previous studies showed that several 
common anti-depressants were no more effective than placebos - even though 
the actual pharmacology (chemical effects) of the medications was well known 
and measurable.  An abstract of the re-analysis is in Science News for 
8/24/96, and will point you to the full information if you wish.
