The "Problem" is not the modem, i think.
To BBSs you usually transfer with Z-Modem or a similar Protocol, and the
file is localy available at the remote site.
If you use an Internet Account, there is some Protocol-Overhead (SLIP/PPP)
that reduces effective transferspeed. furthermore if you FTP files from the
Net, most often there is a bottleneck between your provider and the
ftp-site.
