 Hi Bob:
Have you considered a comprehensive contract that will cover
the mandate of the assignment and allow him whatever time he needs?
(within reason)... you specify the limits. You ball park it at ten
hours? Why not set a fee for say 15 hours. If you want to be more
flexible, agree on a contingency plan, should his time requirements
exceed the contract. ALWAYS get a contract signed - one that YOU have
drawn up. You would be wise to work out all details of the assignment
with him prior to any work and put as much detail in the contract as
you feel is needed. Could be as simple as a one page letter specifing
what he will do, by what date and what you will pay, by what date.
Most professional free lancers /consultants prefer to work on a per
contract basis. This allows for more flexibility... but of course you
will have deadlines to consider. This shouldn't offend your artist. :)
