Yes, it was, it's where ne'er-do-wells were transported prior to the founding
of Australia... the other choice being Newgate Prison or worse.

Also, many people were sent here under the indentured system, which amounted
to white slavery.. that sarted in the 1600's or so and lasted well into the
mid-1800's.. that's an aspect of slavery that's been sorta glossed over..
