Well success at last, but do not really know what the problem was:

. Changed modem from Port 2 to Port 1

. Got another set of the s/ware disks

Re-installed - BINGO!  All goes beautifully!

So I guess either my ports have been physically configured differently
or the s/ware was crook!

So now I only have 'doz 95 to deal with.....
