subject: Pro-43 Keyboard Problem

BP>The worst are the SCAN and LIGHT buttons, the MANUAL, "3"
BP>and "2" keys a little less troublesome, and the rest working
BP>perfectly.
Those wouldn't happen to be the ones you use the most,
would they?
BP>The backside of the pad appears to be clean, and I didn't
BP>see any noticeable wear. I additionally cleaned the
BP>contacts on the PC board itself with a q-tip slightly
BP>moistened with alcohol. Upon reassembling the unit, very
BP>little improvement was noticeable.
That seems to be typical - not much dirt gets in there,
but the keypad does seem to wear out over time/use.
BP>My question is; what is wrong with the scanner, or what is
BP>most likely wrong with it?
Just a worn keypad, I'd guess. If you want, you can try
lightly rubbing each rubber pad with a pencil lead and
seeing if that makes a difference. If it works, it'll only
be temporary, and you'll want to clean the stuff off the
board when you install a new keypad.
BP>Is it possible for the rubber keypad to be worn, even though
BP>it doesn't look so?
Yes, it's possible. I've replaced keypads that looked mint on
the inside, but were causing the same problems as yours.
The owners shared the common habit of using the up, down, and
light buttons WAY too much...
BP>If this is a good possibility, what is the RS part number
BP>for the keypad?
The model number is 20-300. The part number is GE-91C-9212.
Go for it. It's easy and cheap. When you assemble it,
be sure that the logic board is properly seated and screwed
down; any gap will cause the same symptoms.
BP>If worse comes to worse, I don't want to give my scanner to
BP>RS for repair; I've heard that they can undo cell mods this
BP>way, and don't even want to take the chance.
Highly unlikely that you'd have that problem. They'd have
to replace the CPU or the whole board, and someone would
have to pay for it...
OTOH, your wallet would take a beating even if they just
replaced the keypad.
BP>Does anyone have a list of the special key combination codes
BP>for PRO-43 and PRO-2006 scanners, if any? I am talking
BP>about the key combinations that are similar to those for the
BP>PRO-26 which reveal product codes, clear all frequencies,
BP>install test frequencies, test led indicators, etc.
TTBOMK, GRE scanners don't use "test codes". It's the Uniden
fluff that uses them. If the scanner doesn't have a WX key,
don't bother looking for codes.
