From: "Dave Ings" I'm not sure I believe some of the numbers here. I was in corespondence a few months ago with Jeffrey Simpson (Globe and Mail columnist) and at the time when I looked up the FBI stats for New York 2005 (where I currently live) the murder rate was around 5 per 100K not the 7 in this table. And the Toronto rate for 2005 was approaching 3, not the 1.8 listed in this table. (There was a surge of gun crime in Toronto in 2005.) So while I don't question the big picture represented in this table I wonder about the details. Side comments - the 2005 murder rate in Manhattan (vs NYC) is darn close to zero, especially if you are economically fortunate enough to not be a member of what little underclass remains on the island. Also recent press reports suggest the murder rate in New Orleans has surged beyond the already obscene number listed in this table - which is comparable to the worse cities in Brazil (I visited Brazil on business a few years ago, and i was very, very careful.) -- Regards, Dave Ings, Toronto, Canada "John Beamish" wrote in message > > Some self-indulgent comparisons > http://www.toronto.ca/quality_of_life/safety.htm --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
