From: "John Beamish" Toronto ... population 2.5 million http://www.toronto.ca/toronto_facts/diversity.htm Homicides ..... 1998-2002: 56, 49, 61, 61, 60 By firearms ... 1998-2002: 13, 18, 26, 33, 28 http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/homicide/statistics.php Some self-indulgent comparisons http://www.toronto.ca/quality_of_life/safety.htm (Read the Note at the end; homicides includes first and second degree murder as well as manslaughter.) If you do some of your own searching, you may see references to Toronto, Metro Toronto and GTA (Greater Toronto Area). A few years ago: Toronto was a city. The city was in the centre of an arc of city/boroughs and the city-plus-arc was called Metro Toronto. A few years ago, that arc of city/boroughs ws renamed from Metro Toronto to Toronto (with a variety of service amalgamations). Today: Toronto is what used to be Metro Toronto and the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) is now Toronto and, you guessed it, an arc of surrounding city/boroughs (actually, I think they're all cities). So you have to be careful when looking at the nomenclature.
