I almost dropped when the lead (whatshername) didn't come up with a good 
answer.  For goodness sakes, all she had to say was what I said here!

My thought upon seeing that movie was, "Sagan would have ended it 
differently."  Apparently he did, in the book, and several chapters were left 
out at the end (I've been told this; I haven't read the book).  Ah well.
