There is simply no substitute for output distortion.
After having spent too many years with preamps and masters, I started to
find smaller amps and am overjoyed.  I always wondered why I read about
people getting great results when turning down their guitar volume and I
couldn't duplicate that.
The reason was that the distortion was coming from the preamp and you
*couldn't* really clean it up.  I managed to make it work when I started
cranking the little amps up.  There's a hell of a lot of difference.
