Hi Keith!
While I agree that some digital audio is quite strident and irritating,
careful use of the engineering can have excellent results even with
44.1k sampling rates and 16 bits of resolution. I use that and 48k
sampling rates on my DAW system and DAT recorders.
I have also heard and appreciate having better resolution and more bits.
While I'm not convinced that 24 bits and 96k sampling rates are needed
or necessary, I do like the current AES/EBU which works out to 20 bits
and those extra 4 bits do sound much better. Having 24 or 32 bits
resolution in the signal processing is very helpful. Most of the new
digital consoles are at least 24 bits internaly. The new Yamaha 03R has
32 bit resolution in it's filters and that does seem to make a
significant difference in quality.
