So, how does this late adopter get either a Canon camera (Power Shot
A80) or the CF compact flash card to be seen?

When the camera is plugged in, either at boot or afterward, it is not
seen. When the CF card is removed from the camera and put in a USB card
reader it is not seen either.

USB drivers have been installed.

I use a usb 'SanDisk ImageMate 5 in 1' media card reader that accepts
just about  anything on the market including Sony cards.  Their readers
are inexpensive and widely  available.  I'm running W4-fp15.
