subject: Re: The problem in Iraq: American troops

From: "Mark"

I was tempted to reply earlier, but held off, as John had directed his
query at you personally George. I read Ledeen's column when it was
originally published and re-read it upon reading John's post.

I cannot ascertain why John thinks Ledeen is "blaming" the troops
for failure in that column. Our troops do what is directed of them, if
they're sitting around here and there, it is not because they choose to do
so, it is because of absence of orders otherwise.

John, you seem to be of the opinion (and obviously, correct me if I'm
wrong) that the Dems regained control of the House and Senate in the last
elections because most Americans want to cut and run from Iraq. I submit --
as witnessed by your own characterization of Ledeen's position -- that the
Reps lost because they (or the perception of "they" via Bush)
were not ruthless enough in their tactics to win in Iraq in a more
expeditious manner; thus losing the support of their base.

I do think the Reps deserved to lose, and I was heartened by the lack of
hysterics by the Dems in the immediate aftermath of the elections, but feel
darkness descending upon the Iraqi people (and our major cities) with the
rhetoric of late by, what I can only describe as clueless in the extreme,
those same Dems.

It is not a game, but they treat it as if it were.
