-=> Quoting Sondra Ball to Robin Arnhold <=-
Hi, Sondra,
SB> It's downright hot around here. It hit 100 several days running; but
SB> only got in the low nineties today, because a *cold* spell moved
SB> through here. The True South Jersey, where I live, is also now in
SB> drought conditions. We had *no* snow this winter (although we did have
SB> snow in April); and we've had very little rain. Agricultural reports
SB> are advising farmers to irrigate. We are also being advised to limit
SB> our *unnecessary* water useage, but no water quotas have yet been
SB> instituted. North Jersey (and Central Jersey) are also dry, but not
SB> as dry as South Jersey. It's beginning to resemble two years ago, when
SB> we had the worst drought ever recorded in this area.
Peculiar. I'd be glad to send some of our rain your way if I could,
especially since the roof has turned into a sieve and at least one
cloudburst a week here. It has been normally hot here and exceedingly
humid--the paper in the copier at work was so limp today, it wouldn't
even feed. We've had a lot of storms, some of them quite violent.
SB> We don't have air conditioning in our house, so we're just sort of
SB> adapting, and sweating a lot.
Ahha! Discovered! The true origin of the Indian Princess (tm) sweat
lodge!
Seriously, though, the ventilation in this apartment leaves a little to
be desired, so three years ago when it was so hot here, I took my
retroactive pay raise (and then some) and bought two small air
conditioners telling myself I was justified in doing so because I needed
to have it cool enough at night to sleep so I could go to work and
actually get some work done and not doze off. Retroactive pay raises:
my position is represented by a relatively new and inexperienced union.
They never seem to start negotiating a new contract until the old one
expires and it takes them about a year to get a new contract. The pay
raises are retroactive to the expiration of the old contract, so when the
contract is settled, we get the difference between the new pay rate and
the old for the time we were without a contract as a lump-sum payment. I
tend to take it and use it to buy something I normally wouldn't buy
otherwise, like the microwave I bought last summer.
Take care,
Robin
