To elaborate a bit:

if the specs of the hard disk had been hard coded into the bios of your
TP43, then the early boot halts with the message something like this:
"a no standard disk had been found and it might damage your computer -
press  to continue."

This means at every boot and/or reboot you have to be present at the spot,
otherwise your laptop rests for ever at that message.

Utterly awkward it is. (-:
