Hi John,

[Thus spake John Clarke unto Poe Lim:]

PL> USR has stated that only the single board version may not need
PL> modification; as Austel USRs are all daughterboard versions (and
PL> unlikely to be modified since approval as it'll need re-approval), all
PL> the Austel ones do. I assume USR may know what they are talking about
PL> since they made the modems in the first place (and since their name
 PL> don't start with N).

JC> I'm not so certain about that. Mine passes 2 tests to say it is a
 JC> single board type.
JC> 1. I checked mine using the AT~S? to get the modem to spit out the
JC> serial number. The number checked with the one on the sticker
JC> underneath which iwas said to be unlikely if a daughter board was
 JC> fitted.

Same here.

JC> 2. I can hear the relay clicking - another indicator that the modem is
 JC> a single board.

Same here. But I think my Courier (dated October '95) is a motherboard
modem. I peeked through the ventilation vents and my poor-ish eyesight
(had to take my glasses off as they got in the way) noticed two PCBs :-(

The smaller PCB seemed to have a battery (??? it's round, anyway) on it.

JC> This one has a single 10 pole dip switch plus a 2 pole switch with
JC> both poles locked so they switch together. The 10 pole switch is
JC> black while the 2 pole switch is red. I have no info about this
JC> switch in the handbook that I can find. It is currently set to 1. I
JC> recall a message in the USR echo saying single board types only had
JC> the 10 pole dip switch while the daughter board types had an extra
JC> quad switch - mine is half way there. :-) Do you have any info on
 JC> this switch.

Mine's got the 10 pole dip switch with another red switch to the right
of it (with the volume slider on the top). The red switch looks funny -
the white switch itself is fat and the red plastic has a "1" printed in
white at the right hand side.

JC> I haven't opened up the case yet. I presume that the screws are
JC> beneath the rubber feet but how do you get to them? Are the rubber
 JC> feet glued on?

The feet look glued on on my Courier. I can't find any screws either
(they're probably covered by the feet or the case is held together with
plastic clips.

BTW, what's the Part # of your Courier? Mine's "Part # 1.020.091", with
a FCC ID CJE-0263 and FCC REG# CJEUSA-73130-FA-E.

Sunny
