I have 5.2g for DOS, 5.2g for Win3.1, and 6.1 for Win9x+ (which I can run
from WinNT4 but haven't tried under ODIN). Apparently 5.2g (released in
March, 1996) is the last version that will be available for DOS/Win3.1.

Are you talking about Ancestral File Numbers?

If you're talking AFN numbers, the "ID server" is the Mormon
Ancestral File system, which, IIRC, actually started out as paper files. I
believe the whole thing is accessible online now. Never use it myself, not
being Mormon, but for their purposes, it serves as a central repository for
genealogical data. Different people can contribute information on the same
individual, and it will end up in the same file (or at least it's supposed
to, and will, if all the submitters use the same AFN).

Well, there are an awful lot of GEDCOM tags, and I suppose some software
developers don't want to be bothered with the less common ones. I can
understand that (to a point), but what I can't understand is the
non-standard extensions, especially when there's a perfectly good standard
tag they could use if they just read the standard. Another irritation is
the MISuse of some tags (such as ALIAs, PEDIgree, and ADOPtion).
Well, this is really starting to wander. Hopefully we'll hear back from
David Noon in the near future regarding how OOP/OREXX can handle all of
this.
