I can't say I've learned much, but I got it connected.  I first tried 
NetZero.  When I couldn't connect I sent them an email.  I then went to 
deliver the system and spent an hour on the phone with BigPlanet that 
was no help.  I took the system back home and there was an email from 
NetZero waiting for me.

It contained an extensive procedure for configuring the system.  It also 
had a link to a site with the same text plus screen shots.  That page 
had a link to a wizard.  I downloaded that, ran it, and all is well. 
Not only does NetZero connect but BigPlanet does also.  And the LAN 
still works.
