I beg to differ with you, but the ONLY way to truly protect from power
surges is to *unplug* the computer from the outlet! (I found this out

I also disagree with THIS comment. Since *all* surge protectors work on
similar principles, I doubt they "wear out". If they are truly surge
protectors -- they either work or the DON'T work, from my expeirence.
Good surge protectors that even warrant against lightening strikes are
also becoming more affordable these days. *I* lean towards the
Newtronics brand, since I had one put to the test with a lightening
strike to a tree just outside the window of my computer room. The surge
protector was fried beyond use, but the computer had no damage, so the
protector worked as it was intended! $30 U.S. is pretty good insurance
on my $2500 computer system, IMO! If you fear losing any data due to a
surge/power outage, some of the UPS systems are getting more
affordable as well, and also offer surge protection. Just MY two cents
worth! :)
