From an OS/2 or eCS point of view - the IBM Thinkpad T41 will run OS/2
or eCS - only the built in modem will not work. The Dell may or may not
work with OS/2.
Physical quality of construction, normally the IBM product will use
better quality and often lighter components than the cheaper makes.
If the secondhand Thinkpad has actually been refurbished by IBM, it will
be like new, but it will be two to three year old technology.
It depends what you want to use the machine for - if it is to run OS/2
or eCS, I'd chose the used IBM over the new Dell. If you go with the
secondhand IBM T series thinkpad, see if you can get one that is at
least prepared for wireless - ie has the aerials installed and has a
Mini-PCI slot for a wireless card. You can buy an Intel 2200BG (54Mb/s)
WiFi card on eBAY pretty cheaply (around AUS$30) at the moment.
If you prefer to go for the new Dell, then check it's components out for
OS/2 compatibility ay http://www.os2warp.be
