Are you using perl for cgi scripts with apache?  That was one option for a
Fido frontend I considered and played with a bit.  Never got too far into
that though.

Sounds like a plan.  Do those scripts require much editting when you move
them over to the Windows box?  From what I've heard there are a few
differences that require attention, such as the shebang at the start of the
script (#!/usr/bin/perl).

Right.  That is what the neighbour said about it.  He also was going to try
a C compiler, the gcc port (cygwin?), but I haven't heard much about that
so far.

Right.  As well as other local file manipulations.  I did some things with
mp3 files a few years back where perl made a real difference.  I'd imagine
the same script could come in handy for other file formats with a slight
bit of editing.  That is perl's real strength here.  Doesn't take much to
alter an existing script to do other various tasks as opposed to editting,
compilation and debugging of source code - any language.
