I am not sure where you live but in the Houston Tx. area you can call the
Power Squadron. The Power Squadron is located I think across this country
for a very small fee they will teach you a lot more than just navigation.
I think the course was free. The only cost was for the books, but I could be
wrong. They do cover everything, just depends on how far you want to go with
it. they have many courses. The first course will teach you how to read
a map, Dayboards and buoys, beyond Red Right Return! they will cover a bunch
of things like - Navigation - all types, Boating Safety, rules of the water,
Weather, Channel markers, Ranges, (not only in your area but around the
world.) VHF, SSB, HAM, Radio. Boat lighting, Seamenship under sail or power,
Anchoring, Tides, trailering a boat, you will even be abel to tell a schooner
from a sloop, The big thing is when this country passes the law that you need
a
license to operate a boat, and if will. You will fall under the Grandfather
clause and be granted your license. The Power Squadron can take you from
Bath Tub toy boat beginner, to 500 ton Captain. Not to mention all of the
friends in boating you will make and the outings that the power squadron
es.
