I have some friends in the California foothills who would argue with you on
that point. They were camping when they were attacked. I don't know if
the pack (this that the right word for a group of coyotes ??) was starving
or rabid, but they were scared off after only inflicting a few bites.
This was sometime back in the mid 80's.

Dan,

The word "pack" is wrongly used, the group is a family. It was
most likely a total of three coyote's that your friends encountered.
Namely, dad and his 2 pre adult offspring just prior to the youngsters
leaving the den on their search for a mate. The adult female was, no
doubt, fairly close to the to your friends camp in the family den either
gestating or suckling 2 new pups. Coyote's mate every 2 years and raise
their young to maturity, (which takes about 2 years), at which time the
parents push the adult children away to make room and time for the
newborns. They will try to run you off, if you get too close to their den,
with vehement fervor. Now if you have a nice Dobster with you, they may be
more hospitable. (chuckle)

Talk with you soon,
Coyot‚
