subject: Warp 13

RM>FS>You are the experts, I'm the rookie :)
RM>In TNG, warp 10 is allegedly infinite speed and thus unattainable. It's
RM>been speculated that the reason that TOS high warp factors occurred is
RM>that the two series use different warp scales. Yet as has been noted,
RM>there were instances in TNG where high warp factors occurred. This,
True, but very *very* few, & in virtually all cases there are
factors people forget that obviate, obliterate & otherwise negate
the supposed "high warp."
Example the first : "Where No One Has Gone Before." Geordi at
one point says "We're passing W10." Later in the episode, however,
it's discovered that at no point in the whole mess did they ever
actually exceed W1.5. Verdict? Blown out of the water.
Example the second: In AGT, the refitted NCC-1701-D is supposedly
going W13. Yet, does anyone ever remember that the whole POINT of
this entire episode is that EVERYthing about the events in it are
Totally Altered due to the nature of the changed core basics?
Verdict? Blown out of the water.
Example the third: In "Descent" the Borg supposedly "go transwarp."
Well, well, well -- turns out after all that they actually *didn't*
"go transwarp" after all, but were instead going through something
called a "transwarp conduit," in other words, a bypass, or "tunnel,"
if you will. Verdict? Blown out of the water.
In the exTREMEly few cases that remain that aren't mitigated by
factors like these that people plain-&-simple forget, it's obvious
in the extreme that they are "simple .. YATI" (to quote a certain
Very Wise Man ). In the case of the Voyager episode
"Threshold," for example, the whole episode is so full of holes
that the ONLY way to even *possibly* accept it is to simply declare
the entire thing out of bounds invalid as applying to warp
technology. I like Voyager (heck, since I mod the TREK_VOYAGER echo
I ought to ), & even **I** disclaim this one as a piece of junk.
RM>along with the simple silliness of altering the warp scale (can you
RM>imagine altering our current speed scale, so that what is now 70 mph
RM>becomes 25 mph?), leads me to the personal opinion that any notion of
RM>warp 10 being impossible or the warp scale being changed is nonsense.
Exactly -- it's so wildly illogical & irrational a proposition
that I'm Frankly Amazed that supposedly intelligent Trek fans even
consider it to be a possibility. It's moronic -- there's no other
word for it.
RM>my personal opinion, and there are Trekkies
                                      ^^^^^^^^
RM>who are equally vehement on the other side of the question.
There's the problem right there.
