Like I said, one needs to be pretty open minded what with the subject 
matter and all. It IS great. And hardly gross.

Hey, they didn't show the mutilation or the "angry inch". ;)
After all, it's a musical/comedy (with a bit of pathos).

It was a long running and VERY popular off-Broadway musical before being 
brought to film, BTW.

Oh, and I THINK it won TWO awards at Cannes, actually. Audience Choice 
(I think that's what it's called) and Best Director, I believe.

It was THE hit film of that year at Cannes.
Heck, even Francis Ford Coppola raved about it.
