There are really 2 connections when you use a modem. There is the
connection between your computer and the modem and the connection
between the modem and the remote host via the phone line.
The connection between the computer and the modem is the data terminal
link and the connection between the modem and the remote is the
communications link.
Modern modems work best with a fixed speed between the computer and the
modem using hardware handshaking to control the flow of data. The
communications link speed is set by the modem negotiating with a remote.
You should configure your terminal software to use the highest speed it
can handle reliably without loss of characters. This speed should never
change. Set "follow baud rate" to "fixed" and with hardware handshaking
CTS/RTS "enabled". Also set the modem to use a "fixed" speed as well.
