The thing you have to do basically is find out how compliant the material
is.  If you can take a .010" of movement in the thickness of the
roller without moving the scope too far then that level of compliance with
the wheel will be sufficient, otherwise you need to get harder wheels. 
FWIW, wood is usually quite solid enough for almost anybody. Bob May
