SP> I like toads, too, but they require both moisture and shelter in the
SP> garden. (Their most favourite spot, bar none, is in a windowwell
SP> where insects gather to beat against lighted windows at night.)
SP> Even toads will migrate if their food supply gets low. But one
SP> reason I prefer toads to ladybugs is - toads can be tamed. My
SP> M-in-Law had a huge one living by her doorstep for several years.
SP> She could pick it up and pet it, then put it down again, and it
SP> didn't struggle. Every day, when she first saw it and spoke to it,
SP> it would chirp at her like a bird.
SP> And just-hatched toadlings are cute miniatures.
SP> ...Sandra...
So, I'm not the only one who talks to toads, and yes, they CAN be
tamed! I still miss my toad-friend back in Texas :(...I actually had to
put him out of the house on more than one occassion, after he just
wandered in! He was a great help in the front flower-beds! He was
already living there when I moved in. When I expanded the garden to
make room for herbs and such, I decided to make it hospitable for as
many toads as cared to move in. For a toad shelter, I buried a clay
pot to form a little cave--they seemed to like that quite a bit. I could
probably go on and on about how wonderful they are, because frogs and
toads are really just about my favorite critters; however, I'll spare
you . ---Sandra S.
