Responding to a message by Dan, to Charles on ...
DT>Yes...and some writers still use the term. I think "transitional" is
DT>more accurate and is the term used in a recent workshop I attended.
DT>Transitional suggests a temporary situation which is what invented
DT>spelling really is -- temporary. The teacher doesn't leave the learning
DT>up to osmosis either. Spelling, like other aspects of writing, is a
DT>very important part of the editing process.
Okay, color me dumb, but how can the kids edit their spelling when
they're not taught how to spell?
DT>There is a book floating around somewhere that has the current life of
DT>Dick and Jane. Dick died, Jane is living with some guy, the kids have
DT>married and divorced. The dog bit the dust long ago but left some
DT>puppies in the family line. Sort of a 90's version.
Really? I'd heard that Dick was a corporate CEO, that Jane was a
successful teacher and that Spot's puppies fill happy homes all over the
country. I guess it's a question of whether the glass is half-full or
half-empty. ;-)
