Does anyone know the details of this "sniffer" program that OS/2
runs when doing an upgrade? I was under the impression that once it found
the old version (in my case, 2.1) it would deprotect the disks (in my case,
3.0) so that you could install OS/2 into the new machine without requiring
the old version to be present anymore. I tried this out to make sure, and
it DIDN'T WORK! It insisted on being able to see OS/2 2.1 installed.
Which is unfortunate for me, because I bought 2.1 on floppies, so I have to
stick in swags of floppies, before I can do an OS/2 3.0 install from CD.
:-(
The funny thing is, when doing the 3.0 upgrade, it asked for the floppy
disk to be un-write-protected (disk 1). I made a copy of the disk, and let
it write to my copy, to see what happened, and in the directory entry which
has "DISK.NUM", it changed a 0x20 to 0x31. But that wasn't
sufficient to "deprotect" it. :-(
I was hoping to see the last of my 18-floppy 2.1 disks. :-(
BFN. Paul.
