LP> I actually had a three speed once in my early cycling days (grade
LP> school). It was nothing but problems. It seldom shifted properly, the
LP> coaster breaks went out after a few months, it needed repair within
LP> the first month, and after about four months I got rid of it (ie junked
LP> it, no market for a bike like that). I now have 24 LX controlled gears
RS> My experiences with Sturmey Archer Gears are quite good. When I was
RS> stationed in England During the Berlin Airlift I bought a Four Speed
RS> Light Weight Phillips Bike with a 4 speed Sturmey Archer Gear built
RS> into the rear hub. It had Caliper type brakes on both wheels. I never
RS> had any problems with that little jewel and I rode it all over
RS> Lancashire, North Wales, Scotland, Ireland and London. I liked it. Wish
RS> I still had that sucker.
I've had two three-speeds. One I got when I was in college (circa 1958) and
the other as a failed exercise program (circa 1976). I threw both of them
away. Probably neither of them were "good bikes" to begin with -- doubtless
ancestors of the Modern Murray. I don't think the gears on either ever
worked.
