Here is a thought on support during grinding.
After the back is shaped, cast a plaster or cement "tool" against
it as if making a lap support. When it is cured, flip it over, line it
with something firm but springy like firm, thin foam rubber and put the
mirror on top to work the upper face. shouldn't be too much different from
working a thin mirror on a
cushy pad.
