Churches intensify anti-war message

That nearly 100 Lehigh Valley Quakers would sign a statement opposing
a U.S. attack on Iraq is hardly surprising, given the Society of
Friends' pacifist views.

That 179 members of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Bethlehem would sign
a similar petition suggests a more widespread opposition to the Bush
administration's insistence that deposing Saddam Hussein (news - web
sites) is essential to the nation's security in a post-Sept. 11 era
marked by international terrorism.

''You expect Quakers to come out against war,'' said Mary Lou Hatcher,
clerk of the Lehigh Valley Quakers meeting, ''but the Catholics,
they're mainstream.''

Across the country, in a collective expression of religious unity not
seen since the anti-war movement in the 1960s, people of faith are
questioning the drumbeat of war they hear coming from the White House.
