JE> ZR> I'd like to know more about learning styles. My son (age six) also
is
JE> ZR> not interested in bookwork -- in fact, he resists it consciously.
JE> ZR> do want to train him to be able to do a little of it without
JE> ZR> complaining, but it will not
JE> ZR> be our main program since he really hates it and I don't want him to
JE> ZR> hate learning.
JE> Find ways where you can incorporate interesting things having to do
JE> with the basics i.e. the alphabet, numbers, etc. It may be that
JE> your son is just not ready for most 'required' learning that the
JE> public schools require.
Oh, I'm /sure/ he isn't ready... but now the school district tells me that I
have to pressure him with 4.5 hours of writing and spelling per week anyhow!
:( Today a friend suggested I try playing a phonics cassette or video and
just let him watch or... whatever, while he does what he /really/ wants,
hich
is art, art, art and science. So, perhaps if we played the same video four
times per week it would satisfy their requirement. I'm really trying to
find a way to do this /honestly/ without driving my son crazy with it.
JE> Remember most boys are behind girls and
JE> usually a boy will not be ready to really sit down and do bookwork
JE> of any kind until they are 8 or 9.
Really! What's the hurry, anyway?? I want him to /enjoy/ reading, which he
certainly does when I read /to/ him.
JE> If you need any more help, see if
JE> you can find a local homeschool support group for some ideas.
We're having our first outing of the school year on Tuesday... at Black
Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, one of Aaron's favorite local historic
arks.
It is the site of coal mines and sand mines closed many years ago. (Now very
safe, however.) BTW, the town I live in was originally named "Black
iamond".
When the coal mines here closed, the miners and their families moved to what
is now Black Diamond, Washington. Our city was later named New York Landing,
and now Pittsburg (because US Steel has a plant here).
JE> My daughter is hyperactive up to a point. But she is sure stubborn
JE> just like her mother!! I think your daughter just loves the one on
JE> one that she gets pretty much and some of the interaction with other
JE> kids her age. Going for this year may well prepare her for
JE> homeschooling next year .
Yes, if I can still afford not to work. I know it is a possiblity that I
won't be able to homeschool next year at all... so this year means a lot to
e
and I'm giving it my all, because Aaron needs this one on one attention to
et
started. I would really love to be able to bring him up through to first
or second grade level during this year, despite where he's at now (writing at
Kindergarten level). Right now, though, I'm wondering if he's dyslexic
nd/or
color blind. He still can't always distinguish blue, orange, yellow or
ed...
yet has no trouble at all with the other colors.
JE> Start with the alphabet
JE> on a write erase board and let him write and erase as often as he
JE> wants.
Good idea... I was about to buy a new dry-erase board... how did you know??
