not to mention that once you are into that DSLAM (or switch as called
above), you're in the thick of things and at the mercy of all the other
traffic and routers just like any other service...

cable is like the old coaxial networking setup that used BNC connections
with 'T' taps to each machine and required terminating resistors on each
end of the run... in that style of networking, it was like having a long
hallway with open doors for each person... when someone wanted something,
they shout into the hall for it... then they listen and hope for an
answer... the problem is that everyone is shouting into the hall at the
same time... it is like being in a resturaunt or mall and hearing everyone
talking all at once...

DSL is like POTS in that it is a dedicated line from your location to the
central office or DSLAM... like POTS, it is your line and no one elses...
there is only you on one end and the CO/DSLAM on the other... no one
shouting to be heard above any others...
