Here's a dirt-simple dc servo controller design that gives high precision
rate and position control over a serial port. It's based on a PIC
microprocessor, and is a good match for relatively cheap, small or medium
size Pittman DC motors with optical encoders.
Controls of this kind are nice because they don't require a transmission
with an exact mechanical ratio. They can greatly simplify mechanical
designs by being able to generate non-linear rate control as required by an
altaz mount, and things like crude tangent arm actuators.
