-> The ones that you worry about are those who can't hold a thought for

-> to make sense" line but some children who have not been exposed to
-> lots of good language in their first five years don't always know if
-> it makes sense.
 I don't know what you can do for such children. These are the
ones in high school math who can't solve word problems because they
don't understand the statements in the problems.

You know, I don't understand after reading your reply to me, what it is
that you and I were disagreeing about. Your response seems to agree
almost completely with what I've written.
-> I don't believe in setting homework for homework's sake. That if you
-> set it you correct it. That tables and spelling and reading good
-> books are nightly homework essentials. That it should supplement the
-> school work or complete/polish/prepare for presentation that done in
-> class; be something that parents can assist with or keep track of so
-> they know what is going on at school. That it should not take longer
-> to correct than to do. That it should be discussed in class but not
-> overtake class time.
I don't mind if the teacher expects the parents to help correct the
homework. You should understand that I live in a fairly affluent,
middle-class, professional neighborhood. Most of the students have
college-educated parents. This is a good way to involve the parents in
their children's education.
-> I'd say your children were always going to be excellent readers
-> because you spent time with them, conversed with them and read to
-> them something we are seeing less of these days.
Probably true. My husband and I, both avid readers (or at least I used
to be when I had more time) made up our minds to do everything we could
to help our kids develope into readers, since I am well aware that good
readers do better in ALL subjects in school.
