I think you're expecting to use the date attribute on the message for
something it wasn't intended for. The 'references' header is used to relate
messages to each other, and you've decided to ignore it, treating the news
group just like a mailing list. And of course mailing lists often deliver
mail in odd orders.
I posted an image of my window in binaries, I think it looks reasonably sensible.
