I'm looking at Chuck Shaw's motor circuit in his equatorial platform .doc
and in it he's showing a DC motor control based on the LM317T.
Now granted this is open loop... Is the feedback requirement the reason
for all the extra effort?
How about an AC synchronous motor?

IIRC, the op amps are wired in series. Another approach is to use DACs and
go all digital.
