From news reports I conclude that more drugs are entering than before, but not
from within ... they enter via seaports and commercial transport (just as in
the USA).... My son works at a shipping company and he says that whenever they
get a shipment of bananas from South America, they never know what will be at
the bottom of the containers...

Canada will not like to hear that.
While technically you are correct, it is also a fact that the only other hard
border you have with a country is Mexico, and Mexico is not a 3rd world
country.
For a country to join the EU there are piles and piles of requirements, and the
EU will help aspiring countries to reach the same levels ... the EU will even
pay for it (meaning I pay for it).
It will be more avantageous and less costly to help your southern neighbour
than to build a wall, US economy would boom. As demonstrated by the EU where
when you can get countries to trade with eachother, it means prosperity and
peace. Seeking dominance will destroy that goal.
