Indeed but they didn't just want to beat Japan, they wanted a Zone of influence afterwards which they achieved (China is communist as is North Korea (another former Japanese colony) etc. & then the borders of that area became an interesting balance of power place till the fall of the SU (e.g. SE Asia) & even now (because of the sole remaining communist major power i.e. the PRC). However remember that the big surprise for the germans was the arrival (esp in a nasty winter) of the "siberian divisions" which were far eastern so in one way they were just going home via manchuria.
