Hi John!

In John Piper's message to Kris Roebuck on , John Piper said:

KR>> What is the meaning of /bis/ in protocols such as V.32bis?

JP> bis is a French term meaning "an extension to" (not literally -- I
JP> haven't studied French in a long long time).
Actually it means "two". So v.32bis means v.32/2... like the
second version of v.32.

 KR>> If V.22 means 1200bps, V.22bis means 2400bps, and V.32 means
KR>> 9600bps, does this mean V.32bis should really be 19200 and not
 KR>> 14400?

 JP> Nope. :-) 19200 is typically expressed as V.32terbo (AT&T
 JP> implementation).

v.32terbo was a play on words / terms. It is actually a proprietary
standard... but had it been officially ratified it would be v.32ter.
Ter is french for three. There are v.xx standards with the 'ter'
extension, but not common ones.

Note that protocols such as v.34 and v.Fast Class cover ranges... so 19200
is a valid v.34 and v.Fast Class rate, as well as v.32terbo.

KR>> Who was responsible for developing and releasing the V.fc
 KR>> standard?

JP> Rockwell in combination with several modem manufacturers.
This part is always confusing. That standard you are refering to is V.
Fast Class. V.FC was the working name for what eventually was approved as
V.34

KR>> Why is 33000bps referred to as V.34+ and not V.34bis?

JP> Because the ITU-T (formerly known as the CCITT) has not ratified
JP> V.34bis as an international standard for 33600 bps.
umm, you mean has not ratified the current V.34+ protocol as the
international standard. The standard that is ratified as the international
standard for 33600 (if any) will probably be called V.34bis if it is based
on v.34.

Albert
