Rod Speed was raving on in AUST_MODEM about USR trial string:

From what's been said here about the transmit level registers, it seems
that it only improves the level between two USR's and not other modems. So
a V34 connect will automatically adjust itself but a V34+ connect can be
tweaked by us. Simple really.
