Never tried to carry a telescope through the airport -- but I've toted
plenty of other equipment through there.
My recommendation is, don't check anything you can't replace. I don't know
if you are old enough to remember the Samsonite commercials, but the
handlers have not changed in the years since...
This was true even before the events of September 2001.
Just my opinion. I'm sure others have had great success.
No way would I check my 'scope.
