-=> Kenneth Dunn wrote to Oren Weil <=- KD> X Windows was a product of the X Consortium Inc., some other KD> group now owns it. X was orignally not a product, but an academic project begun at MIT. Later, when X servers were developed for commercial systems, the X Consortium was formed to set standards, and they were given control of the X source code. (I may have missed a step or two here.) At that time, the X source remained free, under the MIT license. Recently, X was handed off to the so-called "Open Group", which isn't open at all. Following their practice with CDE, they've said that future versions of X will NOT be free. Fortunately, the XFree86 people have pledged to continue their work, based on the last free release of "Standard X". It now looks like XFree86 (which should drop the 86, since it also runs on other systems now) may become the real standard. :-) ...
