-> Well, maybe, but art is subjective - I wonder.
I know. This gives me pause, also. However, in beginning art (which is
what AP courses usually represent...a beginning college level course)
there are certain things, such as balanced composition, shading
techniques, etc... that students are expected to be able to exhibit. If
these are listed as part of the course requirement, then grading might
not be as subjective as you are I (as math teachers) would think. One of
our art teachers, who is very good, has her classroom across the hall
from me, and I've talked to her before about the grading. She appears to
grade in a fairly objective fashion (makes a rubric of some sort with
what she's looking for in the current assignment).
-> Even with our statewide Regents exams here in New York (about 40% of
-> the math tests are open ended and partial credit is awarded), there
-> is often disagreement over how to score a particular answer.
Really? I could envision some disagreement as they create the rubric.
But don't they hammer out a rubric, maybe some individual is the lead
grader (in AP this person is called the Chief Reader) and eventually, if
necessary, will dictate the rubric (although that seldom happens). The
Chief Reader is usually someone with 6 to 10 years AP grading
experience. By the time the rubric is decided upon, the grading is very
consistent from that point on. (The rubric is hashed out before any
official grading activities begin. Eventually, some additions must be
made to the rubric during the grading process, as some students will
come up with a solution method that none of the developers of the rubric
anticipated.)
-> I don't think we're *ever* going to eliminate *all* subjectivity.
True.

OK, I'll get to that within a few weeks.
