I think this is an excellent point. I've had a discussion (argument)
with someone a time back in the k12.ed.math newsgroup about whether
beginning algebra students should be required to show the steps of their
solutions. As support for his argument that they should not be required
to do so, he cited what professional mathematicians do. I also thought
that was a pretty silly thing to do. Beginning students should not
emulate the masters. They must go through the process and eventually
arrive at that stage.
