Don't forget that slip gauges are available which can check dial gauges and
can extend their range.  "Cheap" sets of slip gauges will be far
more accurate than you ever need here.  Most come with traceable standards.

My experience is that some of the supposedly better class dial gauges made
40 years ago (some never used) are inferior to many cheaper ones available
today.

Mitutoyo slways seems reliable.  No doubt many others are as well.
