The 1830 census showed about 3,000 free black slave OWNERS in the south.

South Carolina's 34th Regiment was the first black unit to fight in the 
War of Northern Aggression.  The north didn't start recruiting blacks 
until whites quit volunteering, and kept its black soldiers in 
segregated units with white officers until 1948, when President Truman 
desegregated the army (the navy did not segregate its black and white 
sailors).

Note that northern carpetbaggers didn't believe that free blacks owned 
property or businesses in the south and confiscated them right along 
with white property and businesses.
