I guess I posted my conclusion elsewhere....
What I ended up doing was to stick at 1G on the ASUS board, and use the
leftover 2 256M sticks in the machine you built for me (and my wife is
using) to bring it up to 1 gig also. Turns out that board (Tyan) has 4
slots, and populating 3 of them is not an option. Everything is running
well now, except that my Maint partition wouldn't boot. I've upgraded it
to eCS 2.0RC2 (RC3 wouldn't start the installer) and all seems to be well.
